The National Universities Commission has approved 33 new universities across Nigeria in 2025, raising the total number of universities in the country to 309.

Information obtained from the commission’s official website shows that 20 of the newly approved institutions are privately owned.

The federal government established seven new universities, while state governments set up six within the same period.

The seven federal universities are located in Rivers, Kaduna, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Oyo and Zamfara states. State governments also expanded the system. Niger, Benue, Cross River and Imo states each created one new university, while Ebonyi State established two.
