The Peoples Democratic Party has announced that its national secretariat at Wadata Plaza will be reopened on Monday after months of closure linked to internal disputes within the party.
The development was made known on Thursday, February 6, 2026, after a quarterly meeting between the Independent National Electoral Commission and leaders of political parties in Abuja.
The disclosure came from the faction of the party led by the National Caretaker Committee under Abdulrahman Mohammed, which is backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The PDP secretariat was shut by the Nigeria Police Force on November 19, 2025, following a confrontation between two rival groups within the party.
The clash involved the National Working Committee led by Taminu Turaki and another group headed by Abdulrahman Mohammed, who serves as acting national chairman.
Speaking on why the party had not returned to the building earlier, acting National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, explained that the police sealed the secretariat after the dispute.
He said the party formally wrote to the police, while the opposing group approached the court seeking an order to reopen the premises.
According to him, the case was thrown out because the plaintiffs lacked the legal standing to pursue it, clearing the way for the caretaker committee to reclaim the office.
Anyanwu maintained that there is no faction within the PDP and stated that the party remains under the leadership of the Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee.
He said this was why the group participated in the INEC meeting alongside other political parties.
He also referred to recent court decisions, noting that the Federal High Court in Ibadan ruled that the issues troubling the PDP had been resolved.
The court reportedly declared the convention held on November 15 and 16, 2025, invalid and ruled that no individual should present themselves as a member of the party’s National Working Committee outside the caretaker structure.
According to Anyanwu, the ruling confirmed that the National Caretaker Committee is the only body with the authority to manage and speak for the party.
He added that party members are relieved and satisfied that stability has returned after months of uncertainty.
Addressing concerns about the party’s readiness for future elections, Anyanwu assured that the PDP will present candidates for all elective positions.
He said experienced party members who have managed the PDP for over two decades are still actively involved and are ready to move quickly to reorganize party activities.
On the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory area council elections, he said an interim caretaker committee would be put in place to drive the party’s campaign and work toward victory before the close of campaigns on February 18.
Anyanwu also reacted to INEC’s recent registration of two new political parties, describing the move as positive for Nigeria’s democratic space.
He said the increase in the number of political parties reflects growing political participation in the country.
Earlier in the day, Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu represented the PDP at the INEC meeting with political parties in Abuja.
