Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reacted after surviving a gun attack in Edo State.
The incident happened on Tuesday at the residence of former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun, in Benin City.
Armed men were said to have opened fire at the property, damaging the main gate and several vehicles parked within the compound.
Obi appeared in a video after the attack and expressed worry about the state of the nation’s democracy.
He said it was troubling that such violence could take place at the home of a former governor and political leader.
According to him, the country should not be one where citizens are exposed to fear and danger, especially during lawful political activities.
He said: "This is where our democracy has reached. A former governor, and you can see what happened in front of his house, where hoodlums came shooting.
“I assure you this cannot continue; we have a country, and we are a part of it. We cannot have terrorism and have officials in government terrorising the citizens.”
The attack reportedly occurred shortly after Obi, Odigie-Oyegun and other political figures attended the formal declaration of Barrister Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress in Benin City.
The event had drawn supporters and party members before the group moved to Odigie-Oyegun’s residence.
Videos from the scene later showed bullet holes on the estate gate and damaged vehicles, showing the level of destruction caused by the gunfire.
The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, said the attackers allegedly trailed the political leaders from the ADC secretariat to the residence before carrying out the shooting.
He explained that the gunmen targeted the entrance and vehicles in what he described as an attempt to harm those inside.
