Residents of Ondo State blocked the Akure-Owo Expressway to protest the kidnapping of five worshippers during a vigil at Celestial Church of Christ in Uso community, Owo Local Government Area.
The attack occurred late Tuesday night when gunmen entered the church and took six worshippers into the nearby forest.
One victim managed to escape, leaving five still held.
The abduction sparked anger among residents, who took to the streets on Wednesday to protest the incident and demand better security.
The demonstrators stopped traffic on the highway, calling attention to the rise in criminal activity and urging authorities to act to protect citizens.
“We are here to tell the government that insecurity in Ondo State is increasing. Imagine innocent people worshipping their God being kidnapped inside a church.
“This is unacceptable. The government must be more proactive in protecting lives and property,” a protester said
The Police had earlier confirmed that a rescue operation was launched in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups.
One of the kidnapped worshippers has been rescued, and a suspected informant has been arrested to assist with investigations.
The police said efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the remaining victims and apprehend those responsible.
