There was tension at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Thursday after security operatives reportedly tried to arrest former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, when he returned to Nigeria from Cairo, Egypt.
The incident was made known by his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye.
He said the former governor was approached by security personnel shortly after landing at the airport.
However, El-Rufai refused to follow them, asking for a formal written invitation before honouring any request.
According to the aide, the situation became more serious when the operatives allegedly took El-Rufai’s international passport from one of his aides during the encounter at the airport.
As of Thursday evening, security agencies had not released any official statement confirming or denying the reported attempt to arrest the former governor.
The development came just a day after El-Rufai spoke during an interview on BBC Hausa, where he said he was prepared for the possibility of being arrested in Nigeria.
He alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress was putting pressure on politicians to either support the party or face political trouble.
He also stated that some of his former associates in Kaduna had already been arrested. W
He mentioned that four people who worked closely with him during his time in office were currently in detention, adding that he believed he could be next.
