Supreme Court Blocks Trump’s Global Tariffs.

The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled that former President Donald Trump overstepped his powers by imposing broad tariffs on goods from multiple countries.

The 6–3 decision on Friday concluded that the law Trump used does not allow a president to unilaterally place sweeping import taxes.

The court explained that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, passed in 1977, is meant to deal with real national emergencies and does not give the president authority to create country-wide tariffs.

The justices said that only Congress has the power to impose such trade measures.

This ruling specifically affects the “Liberation Day” tariffs introduced in April, which placed charges of 10% to 50% on products from many nations. It also touches on earlier tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada that were justified under the same emergency powers.

Tariffs based on national security for steel, aluminium, lumber, and cars remain valid under a different law.

Financial markets quickly responded to the decision, with gains recorded on Wall Street.

The S&P 500 rose by 0.45%, the Nasdaq gained 0.42%, and the Dow Jones moved up by 0.07%.

Trump, a strong supporter of protectionist trade policies, has long argued that tariffs are necessary to strengthen American manufacturing, reduce trade deficits, and improve the U.S. position in global negotiations.

While the White House has not issued an official statement, the judgment is expected to influence how much authority future presidents can claim during economic emergencies.
