President Bola Tinubu has directed that the Samiya International Border in Kebbi State, which connects Nigeria to the Republic of Benin, be reopened immediately.
The announcement came during the visit of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, to the Nigeria Customs Service Area Command in Birnin Kebbi on February 7, 2026.
Adeniyi told officers at the command to avoid cooperating with smugglers or illegal networks that could undermine the government’s decision.
He explained that reopening the border is intended to ease the flow of goods, strengthen security, and ensure that cargo is cleared within 48 hours.
Advanced technology is being introduced to track goods and prevent diversion from approved routes.
The president has also approved the transit of trucks from the Benin Republic through Kebbi State to the Niger Republic.
Adeniyi said modern systems would help monitor these movements and reduce misuse of the process.
He warned transporters and traders to follow transit rules strictly, noting that violations could lead to penalties and harm trade relations between Nigeria and neighboring countries.
The Customs chief was warmly received by officers at the Kebbi Area Command.
He was accompanied by senior officials from the Benin Republic Customs Service, led by Imura Idirisou, and other members of the delegation.
