US President Donald Trump on Thursday drew attention to Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, during his address at the National Prayer Breakfast held in Washington, DC.
He acknowledged her presence among the guests and spoke about her role in Christian leadership and public life.
The annual prayer gathering, which took place on February 6, 2026, brought together members of the US Congress, religious leaders, and guests from different countries.
While speaking on faith and religious freedom around the world, Trump identified Tinubu in the audience and described her as a respected figure, noting her work as a Christian pastor in Nigeria.
Mrs Tinubu is an ordained pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, one of the largest Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, founded by Pa Josiah Akindayomi.
Her role in the church has placed her among well-known religious leaders in the country.
Trump’s remarks came at a time when Nigeria has been under global focus over security concerns and claims of attacks on Christians.
In October 2025, he listed Nigeria as a country of particular concern over alleged violence against Christians, a decision that the Nigerian government strongly opposed.
The Federal Government rejected the claims, stating that insecurity in the country is caused by terrorism and criminal activities that affect people of all religions.
It also maintained that Nigeria’s constitution protects freedom of worship for both Christians and Muslims.
The disagreement led to discussions on Nigeria’s security situation in the US Congress and later resulted in closer security cooperation between both countries, including the creation of a US-Nigeria Working Group to address shared concerns.
