The Ukrainian government has announced that two Nigerian citizens died while fighting on the side of Russia in the ongoing war between the two countries.
Ukraine’s Military Intelligence made this known on Thursday, stating that the bodies of the two men, identified as Hamzat Kolawole and Mbah Udoka, were discovered in the Luhansk area in eastern Ukraine.
According to the Ukrainian authorities, the two Nigerians joined the Russian army between the middle and later part of 2025 after signing contracts with Russia.
They were reportedly sent to the battlefield without proper military preparation.
The intelligence agency stated that Udoka was deployed just five days after arriving, without receiving any form of training.
There were no available records showing that Kolawole had undergone training either. Reports indicate that Kolawole is survived by his wife and three children who remain in Nigeria.
The two men lost their lives in November during an operation aimed at advancing toward Ukrainian positions in the Luhansk region.
Ukrainian officials said they were killed in a drone strike before any direct exchange of gunfire occurred.
