US Clarifies Visa Status For Nigerian Students.

The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that Nigerian students and exchange visitors who already hold valid F1 and J1 visas will not be affected by the recent visa restrictions introduced by the American government.

The clarification was shared on Monday through the mission’s official X account. It explained that those with valid F1 student visas and J1 exchange visitor visas can still travel to the United States and continue their studies or academic programmes without disruption.

This update follows the enforcement of Presidential Proclamation 10998, which began on January 1, 2026.

The proclamation, titled “Restricting and Limiting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the Security of the United States,” introduced partial visa suspensions for some countries, including Nigeria.

Nigeria is listed among 19 countries facing the partial suspension under the new policy. However, the US Mission made it clear that the new rule does not cancel or invalidate already issued F1 and J1 visas.

Students and exchange participants who currently have valid visas are still permitted to enter the US and remain involved in learning, research, and academic activities at American institutions.

In recent months, the United States has introduced other immigration measures affecting Nigerians. Earlier in the year, most non-immigrant visas issued to Nigerian citizens were adjusted to single-entry visas with a validity period of three months.
