Former Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Prof. Abdullahi Usman, has explained that his resignation from office was based on personal reasons.
Usman made this known in a statement he personally signed and released in Abuja on Tuesday, following his decision to step down from the position with effect from Monday, February 9, 2026.
He said the choice to leave office came after careful thought, prayers, and discussions with members of his family.
According to him, the decision was taken with a clear conscience and respect for the duties attached to public service.
Usman stated that his resignation followed the provisions of Section 3(6) of the NAHCON Establishment Act, 2006, adding that he formally informed President Bola Tinubu in writing.
He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for appointing him to serve the country and the Muslim community, describing the opportunity as an honour.
He also thanked Vice President Kashim Shettima for his guidance and support during his time at the commission.
The former chairman extended his gratitude to members of the NAHCON board, as well as the management and staff of the commission, praising their teamwork, dedication, and commitment to duty.
Usman also acknowledged the support of state pilgrims welfare agencies, tour operators, aviation and service providers, and officials in Saudi Arabia, noting that their cooperation helped improve Nigeria’s Hajj operations.
He clarified that his decision to resign was not linked to any disagreement with the commission, the federal government, or the mandate of NAHCON.
As he stepped aside, Usman said he offered prayers for the leadership of the country, the incoming NAHCON leadership, and future pilgrims, asking for divine guidance and successful Hajj exercises ahead.
